How to Make the Best Guacamole

Writer: Briant GarciaBriant Garcia

A Fun Night with Friends

One of my most cherished memories involves inviting friends over for a laid-back evening. We all gathered in my living room, sharing stories and laughter. The highlight of the night was a big bowl of homemade guacamole and a basket of crispy tortilla chips. It was amazing how a simple dish brought everyone together and made the evening so special. The guacamole was such a hit that everyone wanted the recipe, so here it is – a guide to making the best guacamole ever!

The Key to Perfect Guacamole

The best guacamole is simple and focuses on ripe avocados complemented by a few flavorful ingredients.

Ingredients for Simple Guacamole

To make a delicious guacamole, you'll need ripe avocados and salt. Adding a bit of lime or lemon juice provides the necessary acidity to balance the avocado's richness. For additional flavor, you can include chopped cilantro, chilis, onions, and tomatoes.

Choosing the Right Avocados

The secret to perfect guacamole lies in using avocados at the right stage of ripeness. Underripe avocados will be hard and lack flavor, while overripe ones may taste off. To check for ripeness, gently press the avocado. If it yields slightly, it's ripe. If it feels very soft, it might be overripe and should be taste-tested before use.

Ripening and Preparing Avocados

To open an avocado, cut it in half lengthwise with a sharp knife and twist the halves apart. To remove the pit, you can either carefully tap your knife into it and twist or cut the avocado into quarters and remove the pit with your fingers or a spoon.

Beyond the Dip: Uses for Guacamole

Guacamole is not just a dip; it's a versatile addition to many dishes. It's great on nachos, as a topping for enchiladas, tacos, grilled salmon, or oven-baked chicken. You can also mix it into a tuna sandwich or deviled eggs for a unique twist.

Keeping Guacamole Fresh

Guacamole is best enjoyed fresh, but if you need to prepare it in advance, there are ways to keep it green. The acidity from lime juice can slow down oxidation, and storing the guacamole with plastic wrap pressed directly on its surface will minimize browning. Properly stored, guacamole can last in the fridge for up to three days.

Creative Guacamole Variations

Once you master the basic guacamole recipe, feel free to experiment with different ingredients. You can add fruits like strawberries, peaches, pineapple, mangoes, or even watermelon. A traditional Mexican variation includes pomegranate seeds and chunks of peaches. Get creative and make the guacamole your own!

Basic Guacamole Recipe

Prep Time: 10 minutesTotal Time: 10 minutesServings: 2 to 4

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe avocados

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime or lemon juice

  • 2 to 4 tablespoons minced red onion or thinly sliced green onion

  • 1 to 2 serrano or jalapeño chilis, minced (remove stems and seeds)

  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro (leaves and tender stems)

  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper

  • 1/2 ripe tomato, chopped (optional)

  • Red radish or jicama slices for garnish (optional)

  • Tortilla chips for serving

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the avocados: Cut the avocados in half and remove the pit. Scoop out the flesh with a spoon and place it in a bowl.

  2. Mash the avocados: Using a fork, roughly mash the avocado. Aim for a slightly chunky texture.

  3. Mix in other ingredients: Add the salt and lime juice to the mashed avocado. Stir in the onion, cilantro, black pepper, and chilis. Adjust the ingredients to taste.

  4. Serve immediately: If you're not serving the guacamole right away, cover it with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface to prevent air exposure. Garnish with radish or jicama slices and serve with tortilla chips.

Storage Tip: Guacamole can be stored in the fridge for up to three days. If it starts to brown, simply scrape off the top layer or stir it back into the mix.

Enjoy your guacamole with friends and family, and let the dipping begin!
